Training FCB Femení - Third man

Today we share with you an analytical task so our team interiorize the keypoints of the third man concept, as we saw in FCB Femení analysis video. This drill is based in a passing rotation with 6 stages, where we will have 2 players in each of them. This is so the task is more fluid and there are less interruptions and not too much confusion.

Even though we present an analytical task without opposition, its direct progression could be either a possession game, a position game, a situation game, or even a game where, for instance, each point/goal that is preceeded by a third man rotation has a higher punctuation. We know that many people is against these types of drills without opposition, but as Dani Fernández said, sometimes practising these movements without opposition in the initial part of our traning session or even as a warm up can be extremely benefitial so the players start interiorizing the important points of the concept.

We can see the video in here:

The task consists in 6 cones where we have 2 players in each of them, placed as a double triangle (one inside the other). In order to fabour the dynamics of the drill, we reccommend to place dummies in between the cones so the players will have to open the passing lines and get used to place themselves in the appropriate body position. We have not put them in the video so it was not too confusing.

We must take into consideration that this passing rotation is designed so third man actions happen one after another, linked all the time. If we achieve that our team performs this task in a continuous manner, we will see a massive success in more complex tasks. If our team achieves to play this passing rotation easily, we can add a second ball, so we will be reinforcing even more the cognitive structure of our team.

As coaches, we must focus on:

  1. That each player identifies in a continuous and correct manner with the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd player depending on the situation.

  2. Sharp passing such that the drill is quick and effective.

  3. Players' body positions, depending on their role (1st, 2nd, or 3rd player) and where the ball is coming from and where it is going next.

  4. Take into consideration where the free space is. If we take a careful look at the drill, we can see that the free space is embedded within the square comprising the big triangle, where we want the game to take place.

As we have mentioned previously, the only variations we can add in this task is introducing a second ball, as we cannot impose any causing rules that improve the performance of the game.
